Aldreth is a small, low-lying fenland village in the district of East Cambridgeshire, Cambridgeshire, in England, lying just a short distance from the cathedral city of Ely. The surrounding landscape is characteristic of the Fens: flat, fertile farmland punctuated by drainage ditches, reedbeds and raised lanes or causeways that give long views across arable fields and attract a lot of wetland birdlife.
The village is best known for the surviving stretch of the old Aldreth Causeway, an ancient raised route that once linked the fens to the higher ground around the Isle of Ely and figures in local medieval tradition, including stories of resistance in the Norman period. Today Aldreth is quiet and largely agricultural in character, with many residents working on the land or commuting to nearby towns, while its sense of place is shaped by a mix of historic earthworks, simple farmsteads and the rhythms of fenland farming.
