The area encompassing the villages of Parson Drove and Wisbech St. Mary sits in the drained, low-lying landscape of the Fenland district of Cambridgeshire, England. Its flat, fertile peat and silt soils, together with a dense network of drains, dykes and sluices, reflect centuries of fenland reclamation and support intensive arable and horticultural farming and market gardening for nearby towns such as Wisbech.
Both settlements retain a rural village character with historic parish churches, village halls and local pubs, and a community life centred on seasonal events, schools and farming; many residents commute to larger centres while small businesses and light industry sit on the edges. The landscape and field patterns, shaped by the great reclamation projects from the 17th century onwards, give the area a distinctive sense of place within the Fens.
