Thorney is a village and civil parish in the unitary authority of Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, England, sited on a little gravel "island" rising out of the surrounding fenlands. The settlement sits close to fen drainage channels and the River Nene, giving it a distinctive lowland landscape of drains, pasture and reedbeds while keeping reasonable commuter links into Peterborough.
The village grew up around a medieval Benedictine abbey, and the abbey church survives as much of the parish church, giving Thorney a strong historic centre of stone buildings and Victorian restorations. Economically it remains rooted in agriculture and fenland management, attracts birdwatchers and walkers to its wetlands, and supports an active community life with local clubs and events alongside its role as a quieter commuter settlement.
