The ward to the east of Peterborough centres on the villages of Eye, Thorney and Newborough, a largely rural, low-lying part of the Fens where drainage channels, ditches and the nearby River Nene shape the landscape. The area’s flat horizons, grazing meadows and pockets of wetland attract strong birdlife and give it a distinctly agricultural and open feel compared with the city to the west.
Thorney is best known for its medieval abbey heritage and a compact village core of stone and brick houses, while Eye and Newborough are smaller, close-knit communities with parish churches, village halls and local pubs. The local economy remains heavily agricultural, supplemented by small businesses and many residents who commute into Peterborough, and community events and conservation interests keep a strong local identity.
