Cranfield is a village and civil parish in Central Bedfordshire, England, sitting on the southern fringe of the county between Bedford and Milton Keynes. It retains the feel of a traditional Bedfordshire village surrounded by farmland, but its location and facilities give it a more varied character than many rural settlements.
The village is best known for Cranfield University, a postgraduate research-led institution specialising in aeronautics, engineering, energy and environmental sciences that grew out of the post-war RAF Cranfield base. The adjacent Cranfield Airport and business park have created a local economy centred on aerospace and technology, and the mix of students, researchers and long-standing residents gives the community an unusually international and innovation-focused social life.
