Billingsgate is one of the compact wards at the eastern edge of the City of London, sitting on the north bank of the River Thames within the financial Square Mile. It has medieval origins and still functions as an electoral ward of the Corporation of London, though the area is now overwhelmingly commercial with offices and riverside buildings rather than a large resident population.
Historically the ward was famed for the Billingsgate Market, a centuries‑old fish market that operated by the river until its relocation to Poplar near Canary Wharf in the 1980s, leaving a strong maritime and fishmonger legacy in local street names and lore. Geographically it sits between London Bridge and Tower Bridge, so the feel is very much riverfront City - quiet at weekends, busy with commuters and trade during the working day, and marked by the juxtaposition of historic streets and modern financial architecture.
