Candlewick is one of the ancient wards at the heart of the City of London, sitting within the compact commercial patch often called the Square Mile. Its name preserves the memory of medieval candlemakers and the lanes and alleys of a medieval street pattern, though the area has been repeatedly reshaped by events such as the Great Fire of 1666 and the Blitz and by modern redevelopment.
Today Candlewick is dominated by offices, banks and professional services rather than a large resident community, yet it still retains the City’s mix of surviving historic churches, livery-company links and civic traditions. As with other wards it elects an alderman and common councilmen to the City of London Corporation, and its streets are frequently crossed by the processions and ceremonies that mark the Square Mile’s distinctive civic life.
