Castle Baynard is a compact ward on the north bank of the River Thames within the City of London, taking in the area around Blackfriars and the western approaches to St Paul's Cathedral. Its name recalls the medieval Baynard's Castle, a Norman fortress once on the waterfront; the ward still shows layers of history from the Great Fire, Victorian rebuilding and wartime damage.
Today it's primarily a commercial slice of the Square Mile, home to legal, media and professional services with a thin residential population and streets that still carry echoes of Fleet Street's print‑trade past. Governance follows City of London traditions in which businesses as well as residents play a role in electing aldermen and councillors, and the riverside location keeps it busy by day with a mix of historic churches, modern office blocks and riverfront walkways.
