Farringdon Without is one of the wards of the City of London, occupying the stretch just outside the old London Wall to the west. The "Without" in its name reflects that medieval boundary, and the ward’s origins and street pattern still echo its long history as a gateway between the Square Mile and the districts beyond.
The ward takes in parts of Smithfield and sections of historic Fleet Street, and contains landmarks such as the former priory and almshouse at the Charterhouse. It’s a mixed area economically and socially - a daytime hub for finance, law and the leftover media trade from Fleet Street, a long‑running wholesale market at Smithfield, and increasingly a well‑connected crossroads since improvements at Farringdon station, all set against a backdrop of medieval alleys and institutional residents.
