Queenhithe is one of the small, ancient wards of the City of London, hugging the north bank of the River Thames. Its name preserves the old word "hithe" for a landing place: the surviving, much reduced, riverside dock gives the ward a character quite distinct from the City’s glass-and-steel thoroughfares.
Once a bustling medieval port for unloading timber, grain and other cargoes, Queenhithe still shows traces of that past in river stairs, plaques and old street patterns, but today it is largely commercial with offices and a small resident population. Its tight, historic lanes sit beside modern development and it benefits from easy access to transport around Blackfriars, maintaining an understated riverside charm and a tangible link to the City’s long trading history.
