The area around Illogan and coastal Portreath sits on the north coast of Cornwall in England. Portreath is a compact harbour village with a sheltered beach and steep cliffs popular with walkers on the South West Coast Path; its 18th‑century harbour was built to export copper and tin during the mining boom, and engine houses and other mining relics still punctuate the coastline. Inland Illogan is a former mining parish close to the twin towns of Camborne and Redruth, with a strong Methodist and industrial heritage reflected in chapels, local history groups and village architecture.
Today the area combines tourism, small‑scale fishing and a commuter population, with local pubs, clubs and schools forming a close‑knit community. Conservation efforts and coastal management work alongside interest in industrial archaeology, so the mix of dramatic coast, mining remains and rural village life appeals to walkers, history enthusiasts and families alike.
