St Juliot is a small, rural parish in north Cornwall, sitting a few miles inland from the dramatic north coast and the harbour village of Boscastle. It occupies a steep, wooded valley through which the River Valency runs, and is scattered with stone cottages, hedged fields and narrow lanes that give it a very peaceful, timeless feel. The little medieval church is the parish’s best-known feature: the young architect Thomas Hardy worked on its restoration in the 1870s and his courtship of Emma Gifford here later inspired his writing.
With a small, dispersed population the local economy is still rooted in agriculture, though tourism linked to nearby coastal walks and the South West Coast Path brings walkers and literary visitors to the area. Community life is quiet and village-focused, with the Hardy connection and the attractive landscape making it a lively spot for anyone interested in history, countryside walking or Cornwall’s coastal scenery.
