Middleton-in-Teesdale sits in Upper Teesdale in County Durham, England, tucked into the dales at the head of the River Tees. The village is surrounded by the moorland of the Pennines and lies within the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with the dramatic High Force waterfall a few miles upstream and plenty of walking and wildlife on the surrounding fells.
Historically it developed as a market town and service centre for 19th‑century lead mining, and many stone buildings date from that era. Today the local economy mixes upland farming with tourism and outdoor recreation, and the centre still has independent shops, pubs and community groups that reflect a strong rural social life while serving visitors exploring the dale and nearby towns such as Barnard Castle.
