Spennymoor is a former coal‑mining town in County Durham, in the north‑east of England, lying a few miles south‑west of Durham and close to Bishop Auckland. It grew rapidly in the 19th century around coal and ironworking, a heritage still visible in terraces, community memorials and reclaimed industrial land.
Since the pits closed the town has seen steady regeneration with light industry, retail and new housing alongside community‑led cultural activity; local life is centred on clubs, events and the well‑supported non‑league side Spennymoor Town FC. The area typifies post‑industrial Durham towns adapting to change while keeping strong local identity and social networks.
