Stanley is a former coal‑mining town in County Durham that grew up in the 19th and early 20th centuries from a cluster of pit villages into a local service and retail centre. Its landscape and layout still reflect that industrial past, and it sits close to living‑history attractions such as the Beamish Museum and the Tanfield Railway, which celebrate the Durham coalfield and railway heritage.
Since the decline of deep‑mining industry the town has seen regeneration with retail parks, small industrial units and community projects, while retaining a strong sense of local identity expressed through sports clubs, social clubs and volunteer groups. Its position within easy reach of Durham and Newcastle makes it a practical base for commuters as well as a place with a distinct social and historic character.
