Sellafield sits on the coast of historic Cumberland, looking out over the Irish Sea and close to villages such as Seascale and the town of Whitehaven, with the hills of the Lake District rising not far inland. The plant occupies a low-lying coastal site and is a familiar landmark on the West Cumbrian shoreline, visible from the coastal railway and local beaches.
Best known as Britain’s large nuclear complex, the site hosted Calder Hall and was associated with the 1957 incident at Windscale; it later became a centre for reprocessing and fuel management and is now largely focused on decommissioning and waste work under national oversight. Economically and socially it has been a major employer in West Cumbria, shaping local identity and livelihoods while also attracting controversy and environmental concern over the decades.
