The Solway Coast ward lies on the northern edge of Cumberland in north-west England, fronting the expansive Solway Firth. The shoreline is a mix of saltmarsh, dunes and wide mudflats that attract significant birdlife and conservation interest; nearby settlements such as Bowness-on-Solway, Allonby and the towns of Silloth and Maryport create a patchwork of small communities, holiday accommodation and agricultural land.
Economically it combines farming - particularly sheep and arable - small-scale fishing and a seasonal tourism trade, with long-standing cross-border connections to Scotland. The area is rich in historic traces, notably the western terminus of Hadrian's Wall and Roman remains around Bowness-on-Solway, and socially remains a quiet, rural coast with active local groups, an ageing population in places and the familiar pressures of second homes and summer visitors.
