Allonby is a small coastal village in the historic county of Cumberland, today within west Cumbria. It sits on the edge of the Solway Firth, with a long pebble-and-sand shoreline and wide views across Allonby Bay towards Scotland and, on clear days, even the Isle of Man. The bay and adjacent saltmarshes form part of a designated natural area noted for overwintering waders and wildfowl, and the stretch of coast is included in the Solway Coast conservation landscape.
Historically a modest fishing and maritime community, Allonby retains rows of stone cottages and a quietly village-y character; today its economy leans on tourism, local services and agriculture, with walkers and birdwatchers drawn to the coastal paths between Maryport and Silloth. The place is small and close-knit, with a sense of continuity visible in traditional buildings and a steady stream of visitors appreciating the understated coastal scenery and wildlife.
