Whicham is a small, largely rural parish in Cumberland on the Cumbrian coast, sitting on the western fringe of the Lake District near the mouth of the Duddon Estuary and overlooked by the distinctive dome of Black Combe. The landscape is a mix of coastal marshes, rolling farmland and limestone outcrops, with quiet lanes linking scattered hamlets and a long view out to the Irish Sea.
The local economy remains centred on agriculture with a modest flow of visitors drawn by walking, birdwatching and the nearby hills; the Silecroft station on the Cumbrian Coast line and towns such as Millom give modest transport links. Historic stone churches and traditional farmsteads hint at a long rural history, and socially the area retains the low‑key, close‑knit character typical of small Cumbrian communities.
