Millom Without is a largely rural civil parish on the coastal edge of Cumberland, ringing the town of Millom and stretching to the foreshore of the Duddon Estuary. The landscape mixes low-lying agricultural plain and coastal saltmarsh with dramatic upland views to Black Combe, and nearby former industrial sites such as Hodbarrow have been reclaimed as valuable bird and nature reserves, popular with walkers and wildlife-watchers.
Historically the area was shaped by 19th-century iron ore mining and the rise and fall of local industry, but today its economy is a quieter mix of farming, small-scale tourism and commuting, with a dispersed community of villages and hamlets including Haverigg. The parish retains a strong local identity, blending traces of industrial heritage with coastal and rural leisure pursuits.
