Haverigg is a small coastal village in historic Cumberland on the mouth of the Duddon Estuary, sitting just outside the southern boundary of the Lake District. Its long sandy beach and dunes are a local draw for walkers, birdwatchers and families, and there is a modest harbour and caravan parks that give the place a low‑key seaside flavour rather than a busy resort atmosphere.
Locally the village has a close‑knit community with links to nearby Millom and the wider Furness peninsula; people commute to larger employment centres such as Barrow‑in‑Furness and industrial sites further afield. Notable on the edge of the village is HMP Haverigg, an open prison that has been an important local employer. The mix of coastal scenery, wildlife interest and quiet tourism defines Haverigg’s character today.
