Askam-in-Furness is a small coastal village on the Furness peninsula in the unitary authority of Westmorland and Furness, sitting on the northern shore of Morecambe Bay. It neighbours the older village of Ireleth and is a short rail journey from Barrow-in-Furness, with clear views across the bay to the Lake District fells on bright days.
The village grew rapidly in the 19th century around iron‑ore mining and a small port, and remnants of that industrial past - terraces and old workings - still shape its character. Today Askam-in-Furness is a quiet community of local shops, pubs and a railway station, its economy a mix of local services, commuters to nearby industry and visitors drawn to coastal walks and birdlife.
