Winscales is a small, largely rural community in Cumberland on the fringe of west Cumbria, lying close to the coastal towns of Workington and Whitehaven. The parish is made up of scattered farms and hamlets amid low rolling fields and hedgerows, with easy access to both the coast and the lower slopes of the nearby Lake District, so countryside views and straightforward walking routes are a feature.
Historically agricultural, the area also bears the traces of west Cumberland’s industrial past and now supports a mixed local economy of farming, small enterprises and commuters who work in neighbouring towns. Socially it remains a quiet, community-focused place where village life, rural traditions and proximity to coastal amenities combine to give a distinctly West Cumbrian character, with occasional views towards the Solway Firth and the Lakeland fells.
