Distington is a village and civil parish in historic Cumberland, now administered as part of Cumbria, lying on the fringe of West Cumbria. It sits between the coastal towns of Whitehaven and Workington, giving it a semi-rural feel with easy access to the coast and regional transport routes.
Much of the village’s character comes from its 19th‑century history in coal mining and ironworks, which left an industrial legacy in the local landscape and architecture; today the economy is mixed, with local services and many residents commuting to nearby towns. Community life is centred on village groups and a hall, while the surrounding countryside, the nearby Lake District National Park and the Irish Sea coast make it popular with walkers and those interested in industrial archaeology and West Cumbrian scenery.
