The small rural parish of Wythop sits on the northern edge of the Lake District in the reconstituted county of Cumberland, a few miles east of Cockermouth and close to the northern shore of Bassenthwaite Lake. The landscape is a peaceful glacial valley drained by Wythop Beck, with pockets of broadleaved woodland, small tarns and patchwork farmland that attract walkers looking for quieter lanes and footpaths.
Historically agricultural, Wythop comprises a scattering of farms, estate cottages and low-density dwellings; its economy now mixes hill farming with holiday accommodation and other tourism-linked activity from visitors to the national park. A number of 18th- and 19th-century buildings and old field boundaries hint at the area’s rural past, while local conservation efforts help preserve its wildlife-rich woods and wetlands.
