Ripley is a market town in Amber Valley, Derbyshire, England, sitting on the banks of the River Amber about six miles north of Derby. It occupies a low-lying position on the edge of the Derbyshire countryside, within easy reach of the southern fringe of the Peak District, and has a compact town centre built largely of 18th- and 19th-century stone buildings around a market square.
Ripley expanded rapidly during the Industrial Revolution with coal mining, ironworks and the influence of the nearby Butterley engineering works; today the local economy is much more service- and commuter-oriented, while also drawing visitors to heritage attractions such as the Midland Railway centre at Butterley and the restored Heage Windmill. The town retains a strong community feel, with independent shops, pubs and regular local events that reflect its industrial past and rural setting, and many residents commute to Derby or Nottingham.
