The ward covers the adjoining former villages of Codnor, Langley Mill and Aldercar on the eastern edge of Amber Valley in Derbyshire, England. It has a strong industrial past - coal mining and textile mills shaped much of its growth around the canal and railway corridors - and features local landmarks such as the medieval earthworks of Codnor Castle above the village.
Today the area feels like a mix of suburban commuter communities and post‑industrial neighbourhoods with small shops, pubs and sports clubs, while good road and rail links make Nottingham and Derby readily reachable; the eastern fringes of the Peak District are also close for countryside walking and leisure.
