Ashford in the Water is a small village and civil parish tucked into the limestone valleys of the Derbyshire Dales within the Peak District National Park, a mile or so upstream from Bakewell on the banks of the River Wye. Its picture‑book centre, with a grassy village green and a notable 17th‑century packhorse bridge over the river, sits amid steep dales and limestone outcrops that make it popular with walkers and photographers.
Historic buildings, including St Peter's Church and a number of stone cottages, reflect a long rural past and several properties are listed or in a conservation area; farming, particularly sheep and smallholdings, remains part of the local economy alongside visitor‑focused businesses such as pubs, tearooms and holiday lets. The parish is a convenient base for exploring nearby beauty spots like Lathkill Dale and the Monsal Trail, and retains a close‑knit community feel with occasional village events rather than a heavy tourist infrastructure.
