Cromford is a compact village and civil parish in the Derbyshire Dales district of Derbyshire, England, tucked into the steep-sided Derwent Valley beside the River Derwent and the remains of the Cromford Canal. The valley setting gives it a mix of riverside meadows, wooded slopes and industrial archaeology set close to rural countryside.
It is best known for Cromford Mill, Richard Arkwright’s pioneering 18th-century factory complex which forms the heart of the Derwent Valley Mills UNESCO World Heritage Site; the village contains original worker housing, mill buildings and a lively heritage scene. Today tourism, small independent businesses, arts projects and canal-side walking help sustain a local community that still reflects its Industrial Revolution roots.
