Matlock Bath in the Derbyshire Dales, Derbyshire sits tucked into the steep-sided gorge of the River Derwent on the edge of the Peak District. Its wooded cliffs, caves and riverside walks give the village a dramatic, almost alpine character that earned it the old nickname "Little Switzerland", and the narrow streets and terraces cling to the valley sides above the river and the A6.
It grew as a Georgian and Victorian spa and tourist resort, the thermal springs and arrival of the railway helping to establish a long visitor economy; today that tradition continues with attractions such as the Heights of Abraham, a cable car and family amusements, cafés, pubs and small shops, plus a lively evening atmosphere during peak season. The combination of natural geology, historic buildings and a tourism-led local economy makes Matlock Bath a distinctively atmospheric spot in the Derbyshire hills.
