Castleton sits in the heart of High Peak, Derbyshire, within the Peak District and at the head of the Hope Valley. The village is hemmed in by distinctive hills such as Mam Tor and the dramatic limestone gorge of Winnats Pass, with the small Noe running nearby, giving it a compact, very scenic setting that attracts walkers, climbers and cavers.
Castleton’s history is visible in the ruins of Peveril Castle and in its long association with the local lead and rare Blue John stone, still worked at show caverns like Treak Cliff Cavern alongside Blue John Cavern and the theatrical Peak Cavern. The local economy is strongly tourism-led, supported by outdoor recreation, craft and hospitality businesses, while a small resident community maintains traditional village life with well-dressings and seasonal events that reflect its Peak District heritage.
