Derwent is a small civil parish in High Peak, Derbyshire, set in the upper reaches of the Derwent Valley within the Peak District National Park. The area is dominated by the reservoirs and dams built in the 20th century, most famously Ladybower Reservoir, and the surrounding moorland and river corridor that attract walkers, birdwatchers and cyclists.
Historically the valley was home to villages that were lost when the reservoir was constructed in the 1940s, and the vanished settlements such as Ashopton and the old village of Derwent are part of local heritage and storytelling; remnants can sometimes be seen when levels are low. Today the parish is quiet and rural, with an economy centred on outdoor recreation, conservation and the water industry, and a small local community engaged with protecting landscape and reservoir heritage.
