Gamesley is a residential suburb on the southern edge of Glossop in the borough of High Peak, Derbyshire, England. Sitting at the foot of the Pennines and close to moorland, reservoirs and the River Etherow, it feels more like a village outpost with good access to hills and outdoor walking than a typical urban estate.
Much of the estate was built from the 1960s as an overspill development for people from Manchester, and since then it has seen rounds of regeneration and new housing, a community centre, schools and local groups that help keep a strong neighbourhood spirit. Economically many residents commute to nearby towns or Manchester, while culturally the area remains tied to Glossop’s industrial past and the recreational draw of the surrounding countryside.
