Hope Woodlands in High Peak, Derbyshire occupies a large tract of high, windswept moorland in the Dark Peak. The parish is very sparsely populated and is dominated by peat bogs, gritstone edges and upland plateaux that form the headwaters of Pennine streams; the stark, open landscape and dramatic edges make it a magnet for walkers and photographers seeking remote scenery.
Human traces are subtle: a few remote farms, old boundary stones and the remains of historic lead-working and packhorse routes hint at a long history of commoning and upland industry. The local economy is largely hill farming, grouse-moor management and outdoor tourism, and the parish’s isolation contributes to a distinctive upland culture and strong traditions of access within the Peak District National Park.
