Tintwistle sits on the eastern side of the Longdendale valley in High Peak, Derbyshire, just inside the Peak District fringe and close to the border with Greater Manchester and the town of Glossop. The parish is dominated by a chain of 19th‑century reservoirs and open moorland, offering dramatic scenery and popular walking, cycling and birdwatching routes; the disused Woodhead railway corridor is now used as part of the Longdendale Trail.
Historically the area was administered as part of Cheshire until local government changes in 1974, and the reservoirs were originally built to supply nearby industrial towns. Today Tintwistle has a small, close‑knit community with local amenities and events, a largely residential character with many people commuting to nearby towns and cities, and a local economy supported by small businesses, tourism and outdoor recreation.
