Topsham is a compact historic port on the east bank of the River Exe, just a few miles from Exeter in Devon, England. Its position on the Exe Estuary and the nearby Exeter Ship Canal made it a prosperous 17th–19th century trading and shipbuilding centre, and the tidal mudflats still draw large numbers of waders and wildfowl, giving the area a strong nature-and-wildlife feel.
Today Topsham keeps a village atmosphere with narrow streets, Georgian houses and a lively high street of independent shops, antiques dealers and cafés, plus the small local collection at Topsham Museum. The community is proud of its maritime heritage and conservation area status, hosts seasonal events and benefits from good rail and road links into Exeter and beyond.
