Exton is a small East Devon village tucked on the upper edge of the Exe Estuary, a few miles south-east of Exeter and close to Exmouth and Woodbury Common. Its setting of salt marshes, mudflats and creeks forms part of the estuary’s important wildlife habitat, so the area is popular with birdwatchers and walkers and sits within the broader character of East Devon’s coastal landscape.
Traditionally agricultural with long-standing maritime connections, Exton retains a village feel of period cottages and a small local community; the local economy is a mix of farming, tourism and people who commute into Exeter. Recreational use of the estuary - walking, cycling and wildlife watching - helps sustain the village while hints of its historic roots remain visible in the built form and lanes.
