Buckfast is a small village in the district of Teignbridge, in Devon, England, sitting on the banks of the River Dart at the southern edge of Dartmoor. It lies just upstream of the larger market town of Buckfastleigh, and is known for its pretty river valley setting, easy access to moorland walks and a quietly rural character.
The village is best known for Buckfast Abbey, a Benedictine house with medieval origins that was re‑established in the late 19th century; the abbey remains the focal point for local life, tourism and employment. The monastic community has a distinctive economic and cultural legacy - among other things the abbey is associated with Buckfast tonic wine and the breeding work on the Buckfast bee - and its church, gardens and visitor facilities draw pilgrims and visitors, keeping the village lively despite its small size.
