Askern is a small town and civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster, about six miles north of Doncaster in South Yorkshire. It expanded in the late 19th and early 20th centuries around coal mining and the railways, with the former Askern Colliery and nearby freight lines leaving a clear industrial imprint on the layout and local economy.
Today the town sits amid low-lying farmland and patches of moorland and has a strong local identity rooted in its mining and sporting traditions; community clubs, pubs and the local football scene remain important social hubs. Like many former mining communities it has seen post-industrial change and regeneration efforts, with residents balancing reminders of the past with new housing and campaigns to improve transport links.
