Bawtry is a small historic market town and civil parish in the Metropolitan Borough of Doncaster, South Yorkshire, set on the banks of the River Idle and close to major routes that link it to the A1 corridor. The compact centre is notable for a mix of timber-framed and Georgian buildings clustered around the Market Place and High Street, giving the town a character that attracts visitors from the surrounding countryside and nearby urban centres.
Once a thriving medieval river port and coaching stop, Bawtry prospered on wool, coal and trade but later became quieter as transport patterns changed; remnants of that past survive in old inns and the handsome Bawtry Hall, which has civic and historic associations. Today the town has a largely service‑based, commuter and leisure economy with independent shops, antiques dealers, eateries and strong links to local equestrian and country pursuits, and it serves as a pleasant local hub for surrounding villages and estates.
