Stainforth is a small former mining town in the metropolitan borough of Doncaster in South Yorkshire, England. It sits on the flat, low-lying ground of the Humberhead Levels not far from the River Don and the historic Stainforth and Keadby Canal, and its name reflects an old “stony ford” crossing - the settlement grew up around agriculture and later coal-mining activity associated with nearby pits.
Today Stainforth retains a strong local community character shaped by its industrial past, with pockets of regeneration and commuter links into Doncaster and beyond. The town is also close to moorland and wetlands, such as Thorne Moors, which contrast with its urban and industrial heritage and offer notable local green space.
