Located a few miles east of Doncaster in South Yorkshire, Hatfield sits on the low-lying fen and peat landscape of the Humberhead Levels, close to the remnant raised bog of Hatfield Moor, now a recognised nature reserve. The parish includes the adjacent village of Hatfield Woodhouse and retains an agricultural character, with broad flat fields, drainage channels and pockets of wetland that attract birdlife.
Historically the community was shaped by coal mining - notably Hatfield Main Colliery - which dominated local employment and social life for much of the 20th century; since the pits closed the area has moved towards commuting, light industry and farming while keeping a strong village identity. There are conservation interests, a mix of traditional cottages and more modern housing, and a small but active community life typical of the borough's rural settlements.
