Charmouth is a small coastal village in Dorset, tucked on the Jurassic Coast between Lyme Regis and Bridport where the little River Char meets the sea. Its shingle and sandy beach backed by mudstone and clay cliffs is famous for exposed fossil beds - ammonites and fragments of marine reptiles are commonly found after storms - and the village is home to a dedicated visitor centre that runs guided fossil walks and stewardship work along this UNESCO World Heritage coastline.
Historically a modest fishing and agricultural settlement, Charmouth now relies largely on tourism, holiday accommodation and independent shops and cafés, while retaining a village community centred on the church and local events. Coastal erosion, conservation and the balance between amateur fossil hunting and scientific interest shape much of its character, giving the place a lively mix of natural history importance and small‑scale seaside charm.
