Ashburnham is a small, rural parish in the district of Rother in East Sussex, set in the rolling wooded landscape of the High Weald AONB and within easy reach of the market town of Battle and the wider South Downs. The parish is notable for its extensive parkland and ancient woodland around Ashburnham Park, a designated site for biodiversity, which gives the area a distinctive mix of oak-dominated woods, glades and attractive walking country.
Historically the area grew up around the landed estate of Ashburnham Place, a large country house with a long family association; in more recent decades the house and grounds have been used for conferences and retreats and are an important local focal point. The local economy is quietly agricultural and conservation-focused, with a small, close-knit community, low population density and a steady interest in heritage, outdoor recreation and wildlife management rather than heavy industry or large-scale commerce.
