Hellingly is a largely rural ward in the district of Wealden, set in the rolling countryside of the Weald in East Sussex, England. The area is characterised by farmland, pockets of ancient woodland and a small, village-centred community whose social life revolves around the parish church, village hall and primary school; many residents commute to nearby towns such as Hailsham and Eastbourne.
Its history is quietly distinctive: the ward includes the site of the former Hellingly Hospital, a large early 20th‑century psychiatric complex whose remaining buildings and routes (including a little‑known hospital railway) hint at the area’s industrial‑era past and have been the focus of redevelopment and local interest. Today the local economy is a mix of agriculture, small businesses and residential communities, with a strong sense of local identity and conservation of rural character.
