Ridgewell is a small village and civil parish in the Braintree district of Essex in eastern England, lying close to the border with Suffolk. It retains a distinctly rural character, centred on farms, a parish church and a modest village community with a hall and occasional local events rather than a busy high street.
One of the village’s most notable features is the wartime Ridgewell Airfield (sometimes referred to as RAF Ridgewell), used by the US Eighth Air Force in the Second World War; concrete runways, memorials and the airfield’s history still shape local identity and attract interest at commemorative gatherings. Today the local economy remains largely agricultural with many residents commuting to nearby towns, and the social life reflects a close-knit rural community mindful of its history.
