Ridgewell is a small village and civil parish in the district of Braintree, in north Essex close to the Suffolk border, set among rolling arable countryside and hedgerows. The village has deep rural roots and a notable twentieth‑century chapter: the large wartime airfield at RAF Ridgewell, used by the US Eighth Air Force, has left visible hard standings and memorials that still punctuate the local landscape.
Today Ridgewell is a quietly close‑knit community where agriculture remains important and many residents commute to nearby towns for work; social life centres on the parish church, the village hall and occasional local events, while the airfield heritage draws interest from visitors and family historians.
