Steeple Bumpstead is a compact village and civil parish in the district of Braintree, in north‑west Essex, close to the border with Suffolk. Set in a gently undulating rural landscape beside the River Stour, it takes its name from the village church’s prominent steeple and retains a character of historic cottages, lanes and farmland while being within commuting reach of larger employment centres such as Cambridge.
The local economy remains largely rural with farms and small businesses, complemented by a lively village community centred on the church, village hall, primary school and pubs; there are also a number of period buildings and local traditions that reflect its long history as a small Essex settlement.
