South Woodham Ferrers is a small town and civil parish in the district of Chelmsford, Essex, in the east of England. It sits close to the south bank of the River Crouch with surrounding salt marshes and a marina, so sailing and birdwatching are notable local pastimes and the riverside setting gives the town a semi-rural, waterside character.
The settlement grew from the older village of Woodham Ferrers but was substantially expanded from the 1960s as a planned residential centre; today it functions largely as a commuter town with a station on the Crouch Valley Line linking via Wickford to services towards London. Local life revolves around small shops, schools and leisure facilities, while traces of its medieval name (the Ferrers family) and the nearby countryside add historic and recreational interest.
