Wivenhoe is a compact riverside town on the north bank of the River Colne, just east of Colchester in Essex, England. Its attractive quay, winding lanes and boatyards reflect a long maritime history - once a small shipbuilding and fishing port - and it sits beneath the wooded slopes of Wivenhoe Park, the landscaped estate immortalised by John Constable and now home to part of the University of Essex.
The town has a lively arts and independent-shop culture, with galleries, cafés and a community of artists, writers and students alongside long‑standing local businesses; leisure boating and rowing remain important on the river. Good rail and road links make Wivenhoe a popular commuter spot for Colchester and even London, while a mix of historic cottages and newer developments gives it a distinct, friendly character.
